I have, for reasons that these pages will hopefully explain, decided to do something insanely stupid and train for and complete (“run” is not an appropriate word) the London Marathon. I have brow-beaten my son Chris and almost-son-in-law Ben to help me get there by joining the Virtual Marathon at the same time.
The only sensible thing about this is that, as a result, more street-connected children around the world who face the most challenges with the fewest resources can at least have someone they can trust to turn to when they need.
Your support is very much appreciated.
These are various stages in our journey to the start line on 3rd October. The passage of time is marked by our Magnolia tree, the only item in the garden for which I am allowed responsibility (except the grass and some chilli plants)
I said I would share, once I got my breath back, what I have learned about marathon running.
The first thing, actually a number of things, is about my body. My body, as anyone who knows me will tell you, has never been a subject to dwell on and the first disappointment is that it still isn’t.
Duncan is the co-founder and CEO of StreetInvest and carries the mantle for the two other founders, Fr. Patrick Shanahan and John McGuinness. In atonement for a life in the finance industry which culminated with JP Morgan Chase, he has dedicated the last 15 years to street children and the local organisations around the world that support them. He has also atoned by doing stupid cycle rides from time to time. He says, “This has already been immeasurably more painful…and is the last such lunacy I shall do!”
Chris is Duncan’s #1 son (chronologically) and has been volunteered to offer support by running the Virtual Marathon – the same length and the same day as the “real” one. Somehow he is fitting this into an impending first time overseas posting and a first child – the former due shortly after the marathon, the latter due very shortly before it.
Chris’s training style seems to be to sprint between injuries (although this may be expectation management)
Ben is Duncan’s almost-son-in-law as a result of a very close link to Maddie, Duncan’s #3 daughter (chronologically). Both Ben and Maddie have over the years cycled, walked, run along, up and over things in the kind support of StreetInvest. Ben has similarly offered support this time by running the Virtual Marathon with Chris. He has also offered equipment and other advice in the process (including various books which would put you off running to the post office, let alone 26 miles).
